The Freedom to Age-in-Place

Design for Life grew from the belief, rooted in universal design, aging-in-place and sustainable design principles, that our homes should breathe with us, accommodate our bodies and the environment as we transition through the various phases of our lives: from Baby Boomers to growing families to aging parents moving in. The needs we have change over the years, often gradually, sometimes unexpectedly. We believe interior design should embrace universal design principles and ergonomic design that anticipate physical changes allowing us to enjoy life and to continue pursuing the freedoms of living unencumbered. Various studies indicate that well designed environments contribute to overall well being and to an improved quality of life.

We consult with primary care physicians, occupational and physical therapists, and other health care providers to better understand and provide solutions for our clients’ needs. For instance, elders, in general, suffer decreased visual and auditory abilities making some daily household tasks more difficult. The inclusion of appropriate space planning, multi-level lighting and accessible accommodations address cognitive and physical abilities and contribute to a sense of autonomy and contentment. This is reported to reduce anxiety, blood pressure and in some cases pain.

Melissa Cummings, RN is an important member of the Andie Day, LLC team as she brings her exceptional expertise of aging-in-place, ergonomic design for elders and transgenerational issues to each project. Additionally, Andie Day's certification as an Aging-in-Place specialist brings our design offerings full circle through innovative design solutions and the desire to deliver real solutions to many of today's challenges.

Tangibly, aging-in-place is about ADA compliant features such as wider doorways and first floor bedrooms that allow both the able and any one of the 50 million disabled Americans to move about freely; not to mention those extra wide antique armoires.

It’s about faucets that turn on with the wave of a hand to reduce water consumption and wear on arthritic hands. Dimmer switches that reduce eye strain and the energy bill. Induction cook tops enabling busy families to spend less time fixing dinner and more time around the table. We select the highest quality products that your budget allows for and couple our dedication to superior craftsmanship with a commitment to attentive service. All of which promotes your home’s long-term value.

Intangibly, it's about interior design that promotes graceful living, that respects our bodies and the environment, and that plans for life now and after retirement.
