The Furnishings and Their Manufacturers
Modenus – Design’s New Resource
Modenus is a networking platform and resource catalog for the interior design community. They offer the very best furniture, tile, lighting , wallpaper, accessories and more from around the world.
Wawa Yasmin Solo Collection by Richard Ward
Handmade in London, this innovative modular sofa with contemporary styling can be used individually or as part of a super-flexible seating system.
Ernst & Jensen
Morten Ernst and Anne-Mette Bartholin Jensen are furniture architects, based in Copenhagen, Denmark, who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Architecture in furniture and spacial design. They create stylish Danish furnishings with a fluid appeal.
The In Duplo sofa is a low profile modern Danish piece created and manufactured by Erik Jergensen. Shown here in Upholstry Coda/Kvadrat.
Boca Do Lobo
No detail or element is overlooked as the Boca Do Lobo artisans and designers offer the best at the frontier between design and art. Each piece brings its owner on a journey to sources of forgotten pleasure, and then takes them to places they’ve never been before; a journey to Boca do Lobo's world - a world of emotions.
Intricately designed, this cutting edge piece was inspired by the city of Porto and the rhythmic undulating of its black slate roof tops and building facades. Through reflection ingredients such as decontextualization, irony, drama and extravagance were added and Oporto came to life. The cabinet is sheathed in individual scales which are finished in a silver leaf with a high gloss varnish. Its doors feature openings which are spanned with a metal mesh.
Lee Broom
Lee Broom founded his company five years ago and has since gone on to become one of the UK’s leading product and interior designers. Broom designs, manufactures and retails his own collections, in addition to collaborating with other leading brands such as Heal’s, Deadgood and Philips. The importance of the manufacturing process is integral to Broom’s philosophy with all of his unique contemporary pieces produced in Britain.
The Tile table explores the use of traditional glazed tiles on furniture items. Using twice-fired tiles the moulds have been hand carved and monogrammed for authenticity and produced in the same factories that have been making tiles for the London Underground for over 100 years.
The Rug Company
Their vision: “We share a collective pride that we produce and source the finest rugs in the world. Undoubtedly a bold claim, but one that we believe to be true. Sourcing interesting, exceptional pieces requires travel, an addiction to collecting and the ability to spot the extraordinary. We know that during the four months it takes to make each of our rugs, we use the same undiluted craft that was used a hundred years ago.”
Jali Orange Flat Weave Dhurrie
This delightful dhurrie is woven from cotton that is smooth, soft and cool to the touch. It's also very strong and washable.
Restoration Hardware
Restoration Hardware is positioned as a lifestyle brand and design authority, offering dominant assortments across a growing number of categories, including furniture, lighting, textiles, bathware, decor, outdoor and garden, as well as baby and child products. They are also one of the fastest growing and most innovative luxury brands in the home furnishings marketplace.
Foucault’s Orb Crystal Chandelier in Polished Nickel
Nineteenth century experimental physicist Léon Foucault's gyroscope inspired our openwork globe, counterpoised with a spectacular crystal chandelier illuminating from within. The double-gimbal iron frame surrounds the crystals, precision-cut and polished for refraction and sparkle.
The Colors
Emma Watson Fashion Pictures – Fashion Photos of Actress Emma Watson - Marie Claire
We started with Emma's image for inspiration, and then linked what she is wearing * to the Pantone Color Report for Spring 2013. Once our color choices were decided, we turned to Benjamin Moore for the selection of the actual paints, linking them back to the color trends.
Emma's wearing Lancome’s Rouge in Color Lipstick in 106M Jolis Matins—This long wear lip color is made from a new generation of polymer in a comfortable, ultra light texture that feels like a second skin. The brand’s repairing oils smooth and soften lips while lasting for up to 6 hours.
Her wardrobe is via a Marie Claire cover shoot and includes the following pieces: Helmut Lang vest and top: Marc Jacob panty; Jimmy Choo shoes; Stephen Dweck multichain bracelet; and Robert Lee Morris single-chain toggle bracelet)
Lancôme Paris
“Lancôme has epitomized beauty and glamour with a quintessential French touch. Founded in 1935 by Armand Petitjean, Lancôme’s name was born when the cosmetic chemist encountered the historic ruins of the Château de Lancosme while vacationing south of Paris. The mystic yellow flowers that covered the estate grounds inspired the golden rose emblem of the brand.”
Benjamin Moore-An eco-minded paint company
Founded in 1883, by Benjamin Moore, the paint company is actively committed to producing the highest-quality paints and finishes in the industry. Working smart and green is the company’s innovative approach to eco-friendly paint production. They develop and promote products that minimize our impact on the environment. Years before government requirements, they eliminated lead, formaldehyde, and mercury from our paints and met VOC standards.
For two years in a row, House & Garden magazine has recognized Benjamin Moore as the number-one paint choice of designers.
A Tradition of Building Color Confidence
The company’s philosophy embraces the emotional aspect of color in affecting moods and its magical ability in harnessing the power to transform and influence our surroundings.
According to the company website, “Benjamin Moore’s North American Color & Design Group continues to inspire, inform, and instruct on decorating with color. With a designer’s eye, we identify and translate color trends into superior-quality paints. Then we motivate designers, contractors, and homeowners to be creative with our palette of more than 3,400 hues. Color confidence begins with Benjamin Moore color history, spanning three centuries. Our up-to-the-minute color forecasts, advice, and color tools make it easy for consumers and professionals to find exactly the colors they want.”
Eco-Friendly Design Elements
The Art
This street mural is part of the Tales of Nine social cohesion initiative with 7 walls and a seriesof workshops featured on Street Art Utopia.
Green Living Wall
Contact with nature is also known to have an impact in reducing stress and improving well-being. With that in mind, we amped up the healthy living environment in Emma's home by improving air quality with a living wall. Vertical gardens are not only stunning but are quite practical in the most eco-conscious way, they provide benefits such as improved energy efficiency, building structure protection, improved indoor air quality, and noise reduction.
An Eco-Friendly Christmas Tree
There’s a growing trend towards adopting a new kind of Christmas tree, one that we plant rather than cut down. The one we used here is a rootball/living tree provided by a rental service. The service company will return after the holidays to pick up and replant it. Find out more about living Christmas Trees.
Earth-friendly Party Foods and Drinks
Foods we envisioned being served are healthy and organic whenever possible such as the fresh, organically grown green beans, fruit chutney and shelled pecans we included in our board . Keys to easy green-party entertaining include buying food locally and serving organic wines and vodkas like the Square One Organic Spirits brand we feature below.
Square One Organic Spirits Organic Vodka
They craft their distinctive, limited-production single grain vodka using certified organic American rye. The water, drawn from deep aquifers, imparts unparalleled smoothness, reflecting its origin in the pristine Teton Range of Wyoming. Their unique organic fermentation technique combines with a classic four-column distillation and filtration method to create Square One: an incredibly silky, high-quality vodka with a natural richness on the palate.
Flameless Led Taper Candles by Bethlehem Lighting
With these taper candles the lovely look of candlelight can be achieved without the hassle of messy dripping wax or dangerous flame!
Gift Wrapping--The gifts on the floor of Emma's home represent DIY gift wraps made with recycled paper.
The Story Behind the Design: Our Design for Life® Philosophy
Design for Life® is the core philosophy that guides the Andie Day team, not only in our approach to interior design, but in our lives as well. Simply put, we embrace the power of conscious design in creating home environments that promote and enhance healthy “whole person” lifestyles which amp an individual’s quality of life and in turn increases the value of their contribution towards a healthy community and planet.
We’re excited by the paradigm shift we see taking place in individuals and communities towards a conscious and purposeful approach to healthy lifestyles: Think before you buy (products for you, for your home); Think about what you put into your body (food intake);. Think about what you do with your body (exercise); Think about what you do with your mind (lifelong learning); Think about your interactions with others (practice compassion, empathy); Think about your impact on society (influence on positive outcomes for social issues.) Think about the impact you have on the environment (lifestyle choices, buying decisions).
As a result, we are seeing more and more individuals approaching all aspects of their life choices with an intelligent, value-based discernment.
Design for Life Philosophy Applied in Creating Our Holiday Style Olioboard Board
With our Design for Life philosophy in mind, we approached our Olioboard home design with a healthful “ less = more” mindset. We rely on finishes and furnishings for the heavy lifting so to speak. This “uncluttered, minimalist approach” results in less time spent to maintain the home, large, ample walkways and clearances (eliminating trip hazards), fabulous lighting that again illuminates walkways and spaces to avoid injury.
If safety is not considered in the initial and later phases of the design process, accidents can lead to death or an impeded lifestyle. “According to the National Safety Council, approximately 118,000 Americans died in 2008 due to accidents; 54,500 fatalities occurred in homes. Accident rates in homes increased from 2007 to 2008. In comparison, deaths from motor vehicle accidents, the second-highest cause of accidental death, decreased 10 percent to 39,000 fatalities -- which includes 200 that occurred at home. Accidental death was the No 5 cause of death in 2006, behind diseases of the heart, all types of cancer, stroke and lower-respiratory diseases. The Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) lists ways Americans can prevent the most common fatal accidents at home.”
We also promote a healthy lifestyle and living environment in” Emma's home” by improving air quality with a living wall. Using a rootball/living Christmas tree provided by a rental service. (The service company will return after the holidays to pick up and replant it.) Keeping toxic carbon levels down by using flameless candles. And serving only party foods and beverages that are healthy and organic whenever possible.
Why We Chose Emma as Our Muse
Our eco-minded actress and lifestyle icon, Emma Watson is an extremely influential figure of her generation (the 18-24 year old demographic.) She practices a highly aware and conscious approach towards consumerism and the impact her buying choices have on the world. She’s quoted InStyle magazine saying, ''I think it's important to be conscious of what we're buying and where it comes from. As consumers, we have so much power to change the world just by being careful in what we buy.''
In addition, she imbues an admirable industriousness in her proactive, action-oriented efforts towards a more eco-friendly fashion industry. She has previously worked on an eco line of clothing for People Tree and Alberta Ferretti and is currently in the early stages of talks with Lancome—she’s the beauty giant’s spokeswoman and it girl.
TRÉSOR MIDNIGHT ROSE
Eau de Parfum Spray
“Charming. Mischievous. Desirable. A sexy-sweet blend of raspberry, rose, vanilla and sensual musk for mischievous femininity: Catch my heart if you can!”
