Olioboard and Spirit of Sports Man Cave Contest and Free Giveaway

Olioboard has been jumping with activity during their Spirit of Sports Man Cave contest. Designers shared their best “man cave” moodboards vying for three cash prizes. The winning designers received $500, $250 and $150 in store credit from Spirit of Sports. The moodboard entries, created with Olioboard’s cool design tools, are stellar with relevant “man cave” paraphernalia such as game tables, team colors, cool lighting, full bar and guy friendly furnishings. Practically every element that makes a space a man could love is represented.

I was honored to be chosen, along with Marilyn Russell of Design Magnifique in Orlando, Florida, to judge the Spirit of Sports Man Cave contest in conjunction with Olioboard. We certainly enjoyed the challenge of choosing just three winners and an honorable mention from so many well-designed entries. We appreciate each of the designer’s efforts with the inspirational Olioboard boards they shared with all of us.

1st place winner- Lynda Quintero Davids

LITERARY MANTUARY

“Literary Mantuary”, by interior designer Lynda Quintero Davids, won first place in the Olioboard Spirit of Sports Man Cave Design Contest. I voted for this board for first place because the designer let her passion for architecture, interior décor and lifestyles.

The Spirit of Sports artwork in this mood setting room brings the outdoors in which can be very appealing to so many men who are fans of nature. The light fixtures are the ideal scale, shape and finishes, slightly sophisticated but very comfortable. Quintessential masculine furnishings and finishes are paired with rugged leathers reminiscent of baseball gloves and footballs. This version of the dated “den” is a room a woman could enjoy as well. The designer’s expertise with Olioboard is evident and the room could easily translate to a real life setting.

Spirit of Sports artwork  "Swift and Silent" by Doug Lew

Additional furnishings include: Extra large Hicks Pendant; Milo Baughman Lounge Chair, 1st Dibs; Giant spotlight floorlamp by Dwell

In a recent interview, Lynda shared how she uses Olioboard in her interior design business. She said, “Prior to using Olioboard, I’d use my sketches of floor plans or elevation drawings – along with tons of magazine clippings, catalogue tear-outs and drawings. I’ve also done actual sample boards, but who the heck wants to lug that big board around?” “Using Olioboard, I’m able to select reasonably priced style that is very desired among my target market.”

2nd Place Winner- Mirella Parer

FEELING AND COURAGE

This board was an extremely close second for me. The Spirit of Sports Art work “gallops” off the wall and into the room. The use of materials is exceptional.  Typically, when interviewing men about the spaces they’d like carved out in their homes the color palette runs toward dark and rich color schemes or their favorite sports team. The softer hues incorporated  for furnishings and finishes could easily blend in with adjoining rooms.   The designer’s skill and expertise with Olioboard are quite obvious – the room jumps off the page like a snapshot on a live set.

Spirit of Sports artwork Cowgirl 2, Round Up by Michael Bryan

Enchantment surges from the visionary works of Michael Bryan. Michael Bryan is a world-renowned artist loved by many and commissioned by many. His work is displayed in a diverse group of museums including The Salvador Dali Museum, High Museum of Art in Georgia, Blackhawk Automotive Museum in California, and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Spirit of Sports artwork Rocking Ride by Michael Bryan

Bareback riding is truly a rocking ride and the most physically demanding event in rodeo, taking an immense toll on the cowboy's body. Michael Bryan captures the exceptional strength of both bronc and rider at the moment when muscles and ligaments are stretched to the limit. Additional furnishings include: West Elm Lorimer Set 2; Chunky by West Elm; Carved Wood Coffee Table by West Elm; Set of Horse Head Lamps by Burke Decor LLC; Cowhide Rug by Dwell; Thomas Paul Horse Pillow by All Modern

3rd Place Winner- Maria Luis Alim

SPIRIT OF SPORTS MAN CAVE

I really appreciate the way the designer invoked the 3d environment with the use of the glass French door opened and extending and invitation to “come on in”. As in the other rooms, again, the art work anchors the room and establishes a “mood.” It’s a well-thought out choice as it ties in the outdoor view with the background color. The room appears balanced with round openings offering glimpse of the outdoors – visually expanding the room. The setting achieves a rustic, masculine look which will be easy to maintain.

Spirit of Sports artwork "Rocking Ride" by Michael Bryan

This particular artwork was chosen by the second and third place designers for their boards. Rocking Ride by Spirit of Sports Bareback riding is truly a rocking ride and the most physically demanding event in rodeo, taking an immense toll on the cowboy's body. Michael Bryan captures the exceptional strength of both bronc and rider at the moment when muscles and ligaments are stretched to the limit. Additional furnishings include: Crestwood Top Grain Leather Sofa by Target; LumenAria 5 Light Cluster Pendant by Justice Design; West Elm Round Wood Mirror

Honorable Mention- Selma Hammer Designs

SOPHISTICATED MAN CAVE

I voted for this board because of the somewhat ethereal ambiance created with its furnishings and finishes. The designer used color effectively to bridge the masculine and feminine qualities of the room. The scale of the furnishings is appropriate. This space could blend well with adjoining rooms in a luxury home setting.

Spirit of Sports "Dreamin" by Bob Crofut

Earth tones and a peaceful kid in a hammock with his bat and glove give "Dreamin" an intimate and rugged temperament. Bob Crofut's work has appeared in many publications, including National Geographic, Time, Smithsonian, Reader’s Digest, American Heritage, and Yankee.

Additional furnishings include: The Shelter Sofa by Crate & Barrel; Bliss Studio Chandelier; Ikat Pillow for Layla Grayce; Ferret Dining Table by Layla Grayce; Arteriors Malcolm Coffee Table by Zinc Door; Alder Wool Area Rug from the Rug Market Collection

We want to share the following boards with you as they are excellent examples of Olioboard use. Each shows the benefits of using the Olioboard tools to communicate designs to others.

Diesel Den-Lynda Quintero Davids

(another exceptional board by our 1st place winner)

Lynda writes “Convert your man’s garage into a diesel den. I really appreciated the “found” space the designer uses. The room’s rustic and masculine elements blend well with the exposed brick wall. It’s an interesting space. Additionally, the designer displayed a nice use of hues and accessories that speak men who are drawn to ranching and machinery.

Spirit of Sports"Bull" by Michael Bryan

A Relaxed Retreat by Julie Browning Bova Interior Design

Excerpt from Julie’s blog:

“Designing cabinetry for the man cave to house a host of audio and visual equipment can clearly express a more substantial or masculine feeling in the room. Deep, rich wood tones, beams, wood paneled walls can communicate a sense of masculinity. The design theme of the man cave can reflect modern design, a gentleman’s quarters, industrial chic or any style that suits the man. Built ins within the man cave may also include one of the most desired elements, a built in bar. The bar design may include a wine and/or beverage refrigerator, beer tapping equipment, and ample storage for glasses, bar tools and serving dishes. Having several different areas of gathering spots within the man cave such as a bar, comfortable seating, a pool table, dining table and/or other spots to hang out will give the man just what he needs to authentically express his masculinity!”

Spirit of Sports "Classic Duel" by Bernie Fuchs

Spirit of Sports "Hot Walker" by Walt Spitzmiller

Colorful rolling landscapes and poised athletes fashion the enchanting works of art known to mesmerize onlookers. The cheery paintings express a sense of enthusiasm and intimacy. Walt Spitzmiller has many notable contributions to Golf Magazine and Sports Illustrated. BASEBALL MAN CAVE - Jaderyan Visalia

For those of you that know me you’ll understand my affinity for this space. I’m drawn to the finish and hues of the images tying all of the elements together. Can’t you just envision a loyal to the bone; die hard sports fan supporting his team in these small but private masculine men’s quarters? It appears comfortable and easy to maintain. It has the requisite speaker overload and draft beer beckoning you to sit and relax and enjoy.

A few Spirit of Sports pieces that would fit nicely with this space:

Spirit of Sports "Bearing Down" by Dwight Baird

Ready to unleash his power upon a batter, the confident pitcher and his steadfast glove are vividly captured in this distinctively round limited edition watercolor print by Dwight Baird. The crisp lines and fresh colors in this work create an exquisite sense of depth and realism that Baird is known for brilliantly capturing.

Spirit of Sports “Ted slides Safe” by Vincent Scilla

Whimsical baseball images and eye-catching colors meld together in the works of Vincent Scilla. Spirited players and bold shapes capture the big spirit of America’s beloved game.

Spirit of Sports "Cobb Slide" by Ray Ellis

You can feel the dust fly in this piece by Ray Ellis depicting a player sliding into second. The softness of the painting is an interesting contrast to the suspension of the audience waiting for the call of safe or out. Ray Ellis was commissioned by President Bill Clinton from 1998 to 2000 to paint scenes of the White House to be used for the official Christmas card.

Additional furnishings include: Circular Stacking Table by Dwell

Man's Cave- Olioboard User Crysal83

This space makes the perfect weekend “home” for a diehard sports aficionado. Being in the space is the next best thing to being at the game The room’s rugged, masculine and reflects very good use of 3d capabilities.

Spirit of Sports “Block Football” by Steve Kuzman

Spirit of Sports Football Door Stop

Additional furnishings include: LumenAria 5 Light Cluster Pendant, Justice Design; Football Plaque, Posh Tots

The Man Cave!- SN Design Studio

The vibe of this space seems ideal for the 20 something set. It’s got a good blend of rustic sensibility with a twist. A nice color palette and good use of art pull it all together. The round light fixture is mimicked by two crocheted poufs.

Spirit of Sports “Point to Point Race" by Doug Lew

Additional furnishings include: Petrie Apartment Sofa, Crate & Barrel; Change Your Life Pillow; Dado Pendant Light, Currey & Co.

CAPTAIN'S QUARTERS- Olioboard User ATF

America’s Cup and U.S.S Constitution birthday celebration with tall ships extravaganza come to mind. This board is an ideal springboard to set the stage for boat/sail enthusiasts. I really appreciate the color palette making the room clean, crisp and inviting. The Spirit of Sports art is so well suited to the feel of the space.

Spirit of Sports "Flying Home" by John Mecray Nathanael Herreshoff

by John Mecray Nathanael Herreshoff's third design to defend the America's Cup was evolutionary. The 132 ft. yacht Columbia is pictured here during the summer of 1899 in her trials against Nathanael's previous Cup defender, which had been prophetically named Defender. J.P. Morgan's steam yacht Corsair shadows the action, carrying observers from the New York Yacht Club. Columbia will go on to be selected, and in October of 1899 successfully defend the Cup off Long Island against Sir Thomas Lipton's first Shamrock. John's portrait of the great racing sloop captures her just as an unnoticed shift rolls her to leeward while flying downwind with a full complement of sails, backlit and glowing in the sunlight.   John Mecray is a member of Mystic Seaport Museum's Yachting Committee, the New York Yacht Club, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Herreshoff Marine Museum, as well as numerous other organizations.

Additional furnishings include: Parlor Tangerine Chair, CB2; Formosa Burnt Orange Tray Table, CB2; Montagu Silver Mirror, Occa.
